Summoners War: RUSH Review

A Familiar Name, A Different Game

If you’ve been following Fayiette for a while, you’ll know I’ve reviewed all the Summoners War games. Although none of them really done a great job, the Original Summoner Wars & Lost Centuria probably the best of what they delivered so far. So when Com2uS announced RUSH, I was in before the trailer even finished, just to see it out. Over 40 hours on Steam later, I have thoughts. Some good, some really not.

What Is It

RUSH is an idle tower defense RPG built around the Summoners War monster roster. The core loop is straightforward: collect monsters, build a team, send them into stages and tower defense maps to grind through increasingly tough waves of enemies. Monsters can be awakened and upgraded, equipment auto-slots when you get an upgrade, and there are multiple modes to keep things from feeling too one-note: Stage Mode for standard progression, Sky Island Defense for proper tower defense, Challenge Mode for leader board competition, Land of Conquest for zone capturing, and Guild Dungeons for co-op content.

If you’ve played any idle or auto-battler game on mobile in the past few years, you already know the shape of it. The Summoners War skin on top is polished and the monster art is genuinely nice to look at.

What Actually Works

The easy part first: RUSH does the entry experience well. You jump in, get handed a few solid monsters for free, and start making progress almost immediately. It clicks fast. The tower defense mechanics give it enough strategic texture to feel like more than a pure idle game, and placing monsters on a map while managing skill cards in real time is satisfying in a way that pure auto-battlers often aren’t.

The cross-platform setup is a genuine quality of life win too. Start a session on Steam, pick it up on mobile later, seamless. For a game that benefits from short bursts of play this matters a lot. Events run consistently, free pulls come in regularly, and the gacha doesn’t feel aggressively exploitative in the early going. For a Com2uS title that’s honestly saying something.

The Wall Is the Game

Here’s the problem, and it’s a big one. Every few levels, sometimes more often than that, you will hit a wall. Not a challenge wall you can grind through with effort, a time wall. Your team isn’t strong enough, and the only realistic way forward is to wait. AFK rewards trickle in over a day, sometimes two, sometimes longer, until you’ve accumulated enough to push through. Then you hit the next wall. Then you wait again.

Unless you spend. The shop is right there. The offers are timed. The messaging around “speed this up” is constant. Forty hours in and this rhythm hasn’t changed, it’s just moved to higher numbers. The wall doesn’t go away, it relocates.

The other issue is the quest loop. The guide quests that direct your progression are essentially the same set of tasks on repeat, just with bigger numbers attached. Clear stages, upgrade monsters, summon more, repeat. By the time you’re in the thousands of stages this starts to feel less like a game with a plan and more like a machine designed to keep you clicking until you get tired and buy something. The longevity just isn’t there in any meaningful sense.

Steam reviews sitting at Mixed with 48% positive is accurate. The people who like it genuinely like it. The people who don’t are mostly bumping into the same wall I just described.

Worth Playing?

If you’re a tower defense fan and a Summoners War fan specifically, yes, give it a try. It’s free, the early hours are fun, and the cross-platform convenience is a real plus. Just go in knowing what you’re getting into after those early hours run out. You probably, like the most of us, won’t stay in for the long run. But maybe you will…

As a long-term game with genuine depth? Not really. It feels built for quick returns rather than a lasting relationship. Coming from Lost Centuria, which had real competitive soul to it, RUSH feels like a step sideways & backwards more than forward.
