Is This The Perfect Full Loot PVP game?

Albion Online was a Buy to Play Model with eventually switched to a free to play model on April 10, 2019. It has been over 2 years since it’s player base exploded since then. From an average if 300 or so monthly players on Steam to over a healthy 5,000 population that is only increasing from each patch dropping. This just shows, that Albion may just be doing something right.

Fast forward to 2021, Albion maintains a healthy player base of over 8,000 steam users daily, while peaking at 12,000 each month. So, the main question still begs, even though the game has a population, is it Albion Online worth playing in 2021?

To answer that, let’s break down into smaller sections for the community to understand its current state of affairs in 2021.

Is Albion Online Still Good?

Albion Online is developed and published by Sandbox Interactive, a German owned company started in 2012. Sandbox Interactive has mentioned in many press releases that it has no intentions in the past nor future to develop any new games. This means all their resources are poured directly into Albion Online, maintaining it as an MMORPG smash hit.

Albion Online adopts the older traditional MMORPG style except for it’s even more dull. Imagine an unrefined Ultima Online combat system but with less features but more engaging and feature full than RuneScape. That is Albion Online Combat in a nutshell. While it’s combat isn’t top of the line here, it really does make up with the rest of what the game offers in it’s place such as it’s Single Server and it’s full loot PVP and sandbox systems.

PVE Gameplay

Albion Online has boasted being a fully player-driven economy in which every item in the game is crafted by players as opposed to monster, dungeons, or raid drops. What this means is, players have the opportunity to craft every single piece of gear whether it’s tools, weapons or armour to trade or sell at local marketplaces throughout the open world. There is no specialization and restrictions, you can master all crafts and specialities if you choose to do so. This extends to class specializations as well. If you want to master being a wizard and the next day a Sword and Shield user, you are able to by equipping the corresponding gears to that class.

PVP Gameplay

In the earlier years of Albion Online, it was a very PVP driven game, focusing on open world PVP. However, in the recent years, Sandbox Interactive has taken a step back towards Albion being so intensely PVP focused and balanced the game more towards PVP and PVE. The latest Rise of Avalon update was a big update focusing on PVE and dungeons, hoping the PVE player base are having a better experience overall in the game. Despite these changes, PVP players will continue to see updates for PVP such as the Call of Arms Update which includes the new faction warfare system.

Character Customization

One of the biggest MMORPG features Albion Online lacks will be its character customization. You have little to no character customization in Albion Online. In the near future, we can see that this will not be on their priorities list and we should not expect it to improve at all.

Build Customization

Unlike Character Customization, Build Customization is near-endless. Check out the official Albion Online Character Builder

Each piece of gear has different skills and unique effects. In Albion Online, your equipment you wear defines the role and class. Instead of the other way around like most traditionally MMOs.

State of Game

As mentioned, prior, while Albion is a 4 year and ongoing game, it’s population remains at a healthy average of 8,000 players concurrent players. Despite new games coming out in 2021, such as the super anticipated title Swords of Legends Online or the Aion Classic. While the only real competition that may be a threat to Albion’s population would be New World, while the rest as “Theme-Park” style MMORPGs which caters to a totally different genre of players.

Albion Online is Sandbox Interactive’s little baby, it has updates and events constantly. In fact, they have been working on a full mobile cross-play for the past year & guess what, it is completely live right now. Read the Albion Online Mobile Launch FAQ.

One popular event that has been going on from the launch of Albion Online is the Refer a Friend feature.

It’s similar to World of Warcraft’s Referral system, where each “season” will provide different rewards.

Albion has a steady flow of big game updates, Call to Arms in March 2021 being the latest one and Rise of Avalon back in August 2020.

Further, we know Sandbox Interactive is quite dedicated to the game as we have constant detailed changelog patches and fixes.

F2P Friendly

While Albion Online have a subscription-like premium system in game. It does quicken the progress to level your “fame” whether it’s weapon, armor expertise or your life skill proficiencies. However, similar to majority of the games nowadays, you are able to purchase this premium subscription using in-game gold.

One major pay2win feature like Albion does have is that you are able to buy “Gold” which is a paid currency via real money and trade to “silver” which is the in game currency and vice versa.

This can disrupt the balance if we have players who dump in lots of real money to gain an in game gold advantage.

Albion Online has some unique art style that the industry hasn’t seen before. Indeed, it can’t compete with being the most beautiful MMORPGs around such as Black Desert Online or Justice Online however, it’s graphics is uniquely great in its own right to compete with the other titles. It’s population itself shows it. Below, find the Windows System Requirement for Albion Online

What Makes Albion Online Different to Other MMORPGs

Albion Online can be considered an alternative to RuneScape with its full loot PVP and player driven economy system. This truly separates Albion Online against another MMORPG as there is never a dull moment; whether it’s monsters beyond your capacity or being lured, baited or ganked for resources or simply for PVP. This kind of thrill excites certain MMO players for it’s very rewarding Risk vs Rewards system making a lot of older OG RuneScape players relive the old glory days.

Why not just play RuneScape then?

For starters, RuneScape is another great game to play. It’s has its differences and has quite a negative feedback deeply engrained, largely due to being such an old game that has survived through the decades. However, there are clear differences which are the better graphics, more advanced game mechanics and a better core game feature system such as the guild system. Not to mention, everyone loves the new shiny things, a 20-year-old game vs a 4-year-old game. Most would go for the new game without batting an eye.

Is Albion Online Worth Playing

So… Is Albion Online fun to play? A unique art style MMORPG that takes place in the medieval Europe era with a super healthy player base. One of the best in its genre as a hardcore open world PVP sandbox game. As a full player driven economy, if you are a gold goblin, this could be totally the game for you to show off your gold making skills. Or if you are a hardcore PVPer, then with a full loot PVP system, you may just found your new favourite game.

Fayie would recommend playing, this is one of the top MMORPGs out there in 2021 to play currently.
