What is New World
Amazon is the developer and publisher of New World. New World had an original release date in May 2020 but was delayed until 2021 due to COVID and various other in-game issues. This new PVP Driven MMORPG is set in the mid-1600s, players are able to explore and settle down on Aeternum Island and join one of the three factions (Marauders, Syndicate, or Covenant). The game is an sandbox where players are encouraged to gain resources through various means ,whether its plundering, node utilization or through settlements. Like all MMORPGs, New World does have an in-depth storyline along with quests for any loremaster to enjoy and immerse in, otherwise, the players are able to join either or both PVE and PVP content.
New World Closed Beta began just started a few days prior on July 20 at 9:30AM PT (4:30PM UTC) and we are already seeing a angry mob with concerning of issues of graphic cards issues, more specifically, GPU bricking, which lead to the following statement by Amazon.
Amazon Statement
Hundreds of thousands of people played in the New World Closed Beta yesterday, with millions of total hours played. We’ve received a few reports of players using high-performance graphics cards experiencing hardware failure when playing New World.
New World makes standard DirectX calls as provided by the Windows API. We have seen no indication of widespread issues with 3090s, either in the beta or during our many months of alpha testing.
The New World Closed Beta is safe to play. In order to further reassure players, we will implement a patch today that caps frames per second on our menu screen. We’re grateful for the support New World is receiving from players around the world, and will keep listening to their feedback throughout Beta and beyond
Graphic Cards Issue
It first popped up on the Amazon Forums, where a player named Goatz expressed his concerns regarding the game using a 3090 FTW3 Ultra. He contiunes to mention that with other cards, the game ran without issues and was playable. Shortly after, the New World subreddit started to flood with GPU bricking memes due to more users being affected with the same issue.
Since then, there have been speculations who is really to blame here that is causing High Performance Graphic Cards to be bricked. Whether it is the uncapped frame rate during the menu screens or it’s due to EVGA’s manufacture defects. Only time will tell as both companies are investigating this issue. EVGA has confirmed that they will be replacing all GPUs that are bricked under warranty.
In additional, Amazon Games Studios has now released hotfixes which includes capping the FPS during certain areas of the game where it was previous uncapped to stop or minimize the issue from wide spreading.
